STUDENTS

Introduction

Initial contact with Toronto International will be through the Language School, which will continue to be the student's primary contact throughout the internship process. The general regulations and procedures of the School will apply at all times during the program.

The Language School is our client. It charges students a fee for the internship part of the overall language program, and pays us a fee for organizing this service.

Procedure

We will meet a student as soon as possible after arrival at the Toronto Language School. If the student has signed up for the program before arrival, we will assume that the basic information has already been provided by the School or its Sales Agent.

At that time, we will provide further details on the internship process We will explore the preferred areas of interest, and explain what is possible in the context of the student's language skills and previous work experience.

We provide assistance with resume preparation, where necessary, and establish a timeline for the internship program. Intern organizations will not generally require an interview before accepting a student, because of their prior relationship with us. However, we accompany and introduce all students to their workplace supervisors.

We will discuss and agree an outline job description, operational guidelines, and a monitoring schedule with each host organization and student before the commencement of the internship. This ensures the optimum level of communication between all parties, and the effective performance of the student.

We will maintain contact with the student and the designated workplace supervisor throughout the work placement, which will typically be for a period of 6 to 12 weeks.

Work Permits

All students must have visas appropriate for their language studies that are also valid for the proposed business language/work experience internships. Activities in the workplace are neither designed nor intended to replace existing or potential employment positions, and to comply with immigration regulations, the length of an internship cannot exceed the amount of time spent in language training.

Insurance

Students must provide evidence of their own Health & Accident Insurance. Toronto International has General Liability insurance with respect to liability arising from its intern work experience operations.

Remuneration

No remuneration will be sought or expected from host organizations that participate in the internship program. The experience is considered an integral part of the students' language training program.

Expectations

Interns will need to have a high intermediate to advanced English level, to be able to benefit from an internship experience. We will not submit a candidate whose language skills are not commensurate with the job.

If a student wishes to sign up for an internship after arriving in Toronto, we will normally require a minimum of 4 weeks from our initial meeting to when the internship is due to commence.

Due to the lack of fluency in English, the short duration and lack of local knowledge, and in general the limited amout of previous work experience, internship positions will normally be at a more basic level than may be expected in the student's own country.

It is important that students recognize that the main objective of the internship is to develop their language skills, and in particular the rudiments of business language in a North American culture.

While we make every effort to arrange a position close to a student's preference, this must be seen as a secondary objective. Unless, in special cases, where we have agreed to a particular job specification in advance, we cannot guarantee to meet students' exact requirements. What we will guarantee is that the job is at a good entry level, does not consist of menial tasks, and that the work supervisor will take a special interest in the student and provide adequate training and guidance.

Guarantee

We are on the students' side. We want each student to have a good and satisfying internship, and leave Toronto happy with the overall experience. We will work hard to resolve any issues that may arise during the internship, and if we find that a particular job is not as described, for whatever reason, we will find an alternative internship.
